Alexa Website Rankings

April 15th, 2010

Everyone with a web site wants more traffic to their site and if it is a monetized site they want more conversions to make more money. The traffic that your own site gets can be easily measured through your own analytics program or something like Google analytics. What is not as easy to do is to determine how much traffic your competitors sites are getting. One way some webmasters use is the Alexa ranking.

Alexa have a toolbar that users install on their web browser. Each time a user of the tool bar visits a website, that information is sent to Alex who collate it and publish the traffic rank for a website. Google is ranked number one and Facebook is number two and so on for up to 5 million sites. Alexa have several million people who use the toolbar to collect the data from. Webmasters like to use this information to compare their site’s traffic to that of its competitors and to use the number to show potential advertisers.

The problem with the Alexa Rankings is that you can easily increase the ranking for your own site by just installing the toolbar and visit your own site several times a day (even better if you can get a few friends to do the same). When you compare your Alexa ranking to that of your competitors, yours is artificially inflated and you do not know if your competitor is doing the same thing or not. The Alexa toolbar is also only used by technically savvy people, so the rankings are very heavily biased towards the sorts of sites that these sorts of people tend to visit, so are not a fair metric of all websites.

The Alexa rankings do not help a site at all in the search engine results and a meaningless metric as they are biased and can be easily manipulated.
