Growing Bonsai Trees As A Pastime Is Rewarding

September 4th, 2009

Growing bonsai is an absorbing and very rewarding hobby. Growing bonsai trees is not an expensive hobby with not many tools needed. A bonsai is a living sculpture that anyone would be proud to have.

Bonsai are container grown plants or trees that are specifically developed to be a miniature of its full size counterpart. Bonsai trees can be grown from just about any perennial wood stemmed trees or shrubs that produce branches, and is able to develop small through pot confinement with the help of crown and root trimming.

Bonsai can be developed from seed, young shoots taken from the wild (please observe any laws regarding taking wild plants in your region), or can be bought as ready grown bonsai. Although growing bonsai trees from seed is the slowest method, but you do then have total control of how your bonsai tree will develop.

Bonsai trees are planted in special containers that not only restrict the roots, but are also designed to harmonize the appearance of the bonsai tree. Specialist soils are available that will provide the perfect conditions for your bonsai to grow.

Many methods are used to form your bonsai tree and give it character. These techniques include trimming leaves, wiring branches, grafting on other plants, dwarfing and deadwood, (a process used to age bark). Only a few specialist tools are required to shape bonsai, and these are readily available quite cheaply. All that you need to start growing bonsai can easily be purchased from a bonsai nursery.

If you wonder if growing bonsai trees is for you, I say give it a try, bonsai trees are easy to grow and maintain, take a small amount of your time, every bonsai is unique, and who does not admire a bonsai.

Bonsai trees are available as both indoor and outdoor varieties, many bonsai trees are best left outdoors in the warmer summer months and then brought inside during the winter.

And for those that like the idea, you can even purchase artificial bonsai trees.
