Here’s How to Install House Shutters

August 28th, 2009

If you have two good hands and know how to use an electric drill you can install your own house shutters.  If you feel uncomfortable about doing the job, you can pay a carpenter to install some shutters on your home.  However, installing house shutters is relatively easy and can be done by many people.

Do not be anxious about installing your new house shutters.  If others can complete this undemanding job, so can you.  You just need to learn the basics.  There are two standard methods for installing your shutters.  You can pick an inside mount or an outside mount.  It is easiest to use an inside mount that can be completed straight from your open window.

Inside mount installation

When you perform an inside mount installation, the shutter is mounted upon the inside of the window opening on the window jamb.  This is ordinarily a easier method of installation and is much preferred by professionals because it is less complicated and needs no framing strips.

First, make sure the window jamb is solid.  You will want to attach the shutter hardware with screws.  You will have to drill a hole in the jamb at the appropriate areas so that the unit can be mounted into the window jamb.  The jamb has to be solid so that the screws will be secure.

When you have mounted the hardware, you should check to see if the shutters line up with the window.  You will want to use a level to insure that they are aligned. Be sure to read the enclosed literature as each brand of inside mounted shutter is attached differently.  If you can use an electric drill, you will be able to easily complete an inside mount for your shutters.

Outside mount installation

Understandably, an outside mount mounts on the outside of the window, normally into the trim, but occasionally in the wall.  If you are using an outside mount for interior shutters, avoid having to screw the hardware into sheetrock unless it is anchored because the unit will simply come out of the wall.  Some people prefer an outside mount because you can be less than perfect as regards the measurements, which you just can’t do with an inside mount. Of course this means that the outside mount does not look as professional as the inside mount.

Remember to use a plumb bob and level when installing house shutters to make sure that the shutters are hung straight.  Your eyes can play tricks on you, but a level will not.  You will want to have an electric drill, a way to mount the screwdriver heads, and perhaps some toggles if you are installing on a wall panel without a stud.

Do not be afraid to install your house shutters yourself.  This is not too complicated and after you have installed one unit, the rest will come very easily.  You only need a free afternoon, the proper tools, which are a screwdriver, drill, toggle mounts (if installing into drywall) and a level, you can complete this job easily and without much hassle.
