My Journey Of My Advanced Colon Cancer Diagnosis
One day that is forever etched in my memory is the day I learnedAs an attorney I had handled lawsuits involving the delayed diagnosis of cancer and yet even this experience did not prepare me for hearing those words used to talk about my own diagnosis. Given that I had worked as a delayed diagnosis of cancer lawyer and come to understand the symptoms of a number of different kinds of cancers, including advanced colon cancer I did not hesitate when I began to show symptoms myself. I consulted with my primary care physician who advised that even though I was too young for regular screening for colon cancer and although I did not have anyone in my family with colon cancer colon cancer (at the time) that I needed to nonetheless undergo a colonoscopy to rule out cancer as the reason for my symptoms.
The colonoscopy found that I had a significant cancerous tumor in my colon. Surgery confirmed that it had by then begun spreading. The cancer was stage 3 colon cancer. Not good news. I knew there was a good part of this was that at least it was not stage 4 colon cancer. Yet it was nonetheless metastatic colon cancer that had spread to my lymph nodes. And I had a moment of true fear and uncertainty when I received the news. I understood that my chances of long term survival were only about 50%. Even though I was a lawyer who had handled medical malpractice claims, even lawsuits concerning colon cancer, did not help me to avoid that instant of pure anxiety and dread. For at that moment I thought I not survive the cancer
At that moment I called a friend who was also an attorney and had been one of my mentors. I suppose it was pure instinct that I reached out to him first. He did not sugar coat it. And that was precisely what I needed. Someone else to express out loud what the reality was and what had to be done. He then offered to help with whatever I needed. And later the managing partner at the firm, another good friend, offered to handle all my cases during my treatment. He did not ask for anything in return. The offer was made as a colleague and a friend. I have alwats been grateful to him for that.
While I needed a few weeks to recover following surgery and while there were days throughout the course of chemotherapy that I just did not feel well enough to do anything, I was, generally, able to continue working. This gave me immense satisfaction. I felt that I was able to carry my weight and lead more or less a normal life during my treatment. Seven years later I exhibit no evidence of cancer. If I had waited perhaps even a few months the cancer would have continued to advance and I in all likelihood would have lost the battle against this dreadful disase.
The lesson for everyone is to get the right test if you exhibit symptoms of colon cancer. To allow oneself the most treatment possibilities and the best likelihood beating the cancer is to detect and treat it early.
The content preceeding is merely for general educational purposes and is not meant as medical advice. Seek the advice of a physician immediately if you show symptoms of colon cancer.
In the event that a physician does not make an appropriate referral or order appropriate tests when the patient has complaints of symptoms (especially blood in the stool) and the person later dies due to the cancer, then a wrongful death lawyer may be able to assist the loved ones.
