Natural Management Of Crohns Disease.

May 17th, 2010

Recently   there has been a shift  towards a more holistic approach to medicine, including the use of alternatives to mainstream medicine. This has resulted in a boom and substantial  growth in what is called   the alternative health industry.  Alternative remedies include looking to the past for treatments that were discarded and can be revived to effectively treat ailments.

Everywhere today we see organic supermarkets and stores, acupuncture clinics, Chinese medicine stores and alternative health practitioners. Can Crohns disease be treated by using alternative medicines and alternative medical practices?   It would seem   so, as there are reports of many  treatments that have been of significant  benefit to Crohns sufferers.

Acupuncture is one of the alternative ways to treat   Crohns that has reportedly been effective.   Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese treatment where very thin needles are inserted into various locations in the body. The needles do not penetrate very deeply below the skin and the insertion is painless.

Because of the nature of Crohn’s disease,  it is quite common  that Crohns patients suffer from a decreased ability for  the body to absorb essential nutrients from their food. It’s common  therefore for patients to take mineral and vitamin supplements as well as trace elements, to address the deficiency.  The most common vitamins that arelacking  in people with Crohn’s disease are vitamins B12, C, E and folate. Minerals that are often lacking include iron, calcium, magnesium, and zinc.

For sufferers  desiring  to manage their condition in a more holistic  manner , it is necessary to include diet and exercise as well.

There are many dietary alternatives for Crohns sufferers. Look into the work done by Sherry Brescia, whose approach   to diet is to design   food combinations that allow you to still eat all the foods you enjoy , without experiencing   pain or discomfort. Get a free copy of her “Pain Free in 1 Day” booklet for sufferers of all bowel complaints including Crohn’s disease.

Combining sensible nutritional intake and sensible, appropriate exercise for your age and physical condition, gives  your body the strength and stamina to better manage   any ailment or disease, including the disease Crohns.

Do not assume that alternative remedies and actions mean ignoring medications or the recommendations of your doctor or specialist.   Quite the opposite , what you should seek   to do is to design an holistic action plan with your health professional, so that you give yourself the best of both worlds.

As you probably know, there is no cure for Crohns. Not yet anyway. Research into the disease continues and a cure may yet be found. In the meantime the best approach is to control   the disease in such a way as to result in a lifestyle that is as comfortable   as possible.
