Vintage Sewing Machine: Own an Enduring Legacy

November 20th, 2009

Growing up, I often listen to the whir of my Nana’s antique sewing machine. Though it seemed awfully old, it was attractive and elegant. My grandmother mentioned that she got the sewing machine from her Aunt who trained her how to use the mechanism. Everyday, she always appeared to have sewing work varying from pillows and drapes to outfits. Sometimes, I would also observe my mother give granny’s antique sewing machine a try. Together, they created several gorgeous designs that I have always cherished until this day.

When my parents died, I inherited practically everything including my loving grandmother’s wonderful old singer sewing machine. I was so stunned at how beautiful it still appears. And the most amazing thing about it is that it works flawlessly albeit slow. Thankfully, my mother had a gift for keeping things intact and preserved.

One day while I was surfing the internet, I came across a photo of the old sewing machines that looked like the one I inherited from my grandmother. It turns out that I possess an antique sewing machine from Singer. The particular model that I have was named The Family or more distinctively known as The Turtleback. A extraordinary piece, the Turtleback has been hunted by lots of antique collectors who are prepared to give huge amount for it. Because of my surprising discovery, I loved my antique sewing machine even more. Eventually I became passionate into researching more data about various antique sewing machines that made a difference in the textile industry as well as in the lives of millions of households. By then my fascination for these wonderful machines grew and I began collecting earlier pieces of sewing machines as well.

After countless flea markets, garage sales, and online auctions later, I have purchased several antique sewing machines that are truly coveted of most antique collectors. What’s so wonderful about my acquirement’s are that they are for the most part in perfect shape. Though some of them need a bit of maintenance, my antique sewing machines appear beautiful.
