What Causes Dark Circles Under Eyes – Tips

June 7th, 2010

Dark circles under eyes can happen to both genders but it’s the women that have the most negative feelings toward this. To women, these circles causes low self-confidence when what she sees in staring back at her in the mirror all the time is a sick or stressed looking person. Yes, they are really annoying but almost certainly contrary to popular idea, the reason isn’t always sleep disorders. So what are the other factors?

The thinnest and a significant percentage of delicate skin in the body is absolutely the skin within the perimeter of the eye that is thinly dotted with oil glands. When this specific location gets dry, the veins become prominent giving the eye a dark coloring

There are in fact many reasons why this occurs, the next section discusses those.

  1. Heredity:
If your parents have circles under eyes then there’s a good chance of you getting them too because the thinness of the eye area is a hereditary trait. Also if you’re prone to skin allergies then it could be the cause of those dark circles. Rubbing the eye area and inflammation of the skin around the eye makes it look dark.
  2.

  3. Not Enough Sleep: Late night partying, lesser amounts of sleep, fatigue, stress, infected sinuses and pregnancy makes the skin pale. Veins are more prominent when skin is pale which make you have circles under eyes look.

  4. Facial Bone Structure: If you have deep set eyes, it gives the appearance of dark shadows around the eyes giving the impression that you have puffy eyes.
  5.

  6. Too Much Sun Exposure: If you are too exposed to the sunlight, the pigmentation of your skin increases causing the skin to tan. When this happens to the area under the eyes, the exposed skin darkens.
  7.

  8. Medications:
A lot of medicines cause the blood vessels to dilate. raccoon eyes will appear due to the thinness of the skin in this area.
  9.

  10. Improper Nutrition: With poor nutrition, the skin will become pale due to the lack of essential nutrients absorbed by the body. Paleness of skin emphasizes the appearance of veins making the skin look dark.
  11.

  12. Hormonal Imbalance:
Hormonal imbalance which is normal and usually happens to women who are expecting babies, when their menstruation is approaching or occuring, and lastly menopause can cause the skin to look pale. Pale skin unfortunately emphasizes those thin veins under the eye’s skin making you look like a racoon.
  13.

  14. Lifestyle: Smoking, drinking alcohol, too much caffeine all contribute to a darker coloration around the eye area.
