What Is a RAR File Format

July 15th, 2010

.rar archive format has been used a lot to compact huge folders. If you frequently download stuff from information sharing websites such as Rapidshare, I’m sure you have found several files that were compressed in the .rar format. Many users use the commercial WinRar application to compress their documents as Rar archives because they’ve heard of the benefits of encoding files with the .rar extension. Using this application, we can attain a big filesize reduction for the files and folders, and also split a huge archive into several parts to make the files easier to download.

The problem is we must install a suitable tool to extract .rar archives. However, since there is a whole bunch of archivers that can recognize .rar files, so that shouldn’t be a issue anymore. On the other hand, some users mistakenly think that the single available program that supports the archive is WinRar itself, a commercial tool. That’s not entirely so.

One of the most well known programs that can extract Rar archives is 7-zip, which is a freeware. Besides being a freeware RAR file extractor and supporting the RAR archive format, this program also can create and open a large number of varied file formats. If you take a look at the number of file formats supported, you will likely wonder why such a useful tool is available for free. Maybe some of you will even doubt that it is really freeware and not, say, adware, but it is really entirely free. Install it and you will believe it. You can use it for free as long as you like. All the features can be used for free without exception. So, visit their homepage and download the program.
