You can still use the fireplace during a cold spring

May 4th, 2009

It’s officially spring here, but I wouldn’t exactly call it warm outside. It swings so wildly between warm and cold we can have 70 degrees during the day and down to 15 degrees at night. Those cold nights definitely invite the old feelings of winter and make me want to snuggle in front of a warm fire reading a good book.

My neighbors might think it’s weird, but using the fireplace even in April is still important in some parts of the country. And I don’t care what they say, I’m going to do it.

Now, whether you have the electric fireplace inserts or ventless gas fireplace, as long as you have something that is relatively cost efficient then go ahead and use it and spare your furnace the extra work.

If you have a real fireplace, or at least one that has real flame, be sure to protect the smaller members of your family from falling into it by getting a decorative fireplace screen to cover the opening. You can easily move the screen if you need to stoke the fire. Many people will use the screen for strictly decorative purposes if they have the electric fireplace variety.

After a solid 6 months of cold winter I’m ready for warmer weather, but as long as I’m forced to deal with cold for a few weeks longer then I’m going to take advantage of all the creature comforts available to me.
